If any of the great painters of light - J.M.W. So clever, in fact, that they can produce paintings that, although never matching the luminosity of natural light, may evoke similar sensations. To create an illusion of light, painters learn to manipulate value and color in clever ways. Value can exist independent of color, as in a drawing, but color cannot exist independent of value, because value is one of the attributes of a color. Color includes attributes like hue, temperature, intensity, and value. Value is the relative lightness or darkness of a color. There are only two means at our disposal for creating an illusion of light - value and color. The Painter’s Light - a Function of Value and Color Gold as a Metaphor of Light – Sue Charles.White as a Stand-In for Light – Kim English.Color and Value Priority Transitional – Robin Weiss.Light Through Value Alone – Kris Ekstrand. In this post, I’d like to explore approaches to capturing light used by six different painters. We have to be very clever about how we handle the balance between value and color. It isn’t simply a matter of copying what we see. However, “capturing” light, as we often call it, can be quite challenging. The qualities of natural light - its luminosity, its range, its brilliance - are what draws many painters to landscape in the first place. Just about everyone’s answer includes the word “ light.” In every landscape painting workshop I teach, I ask everyone, “What is the painting about?” I want them to describe the aesthetic qualities they are most interested in, such as movement, depth, or color. Works by Ben Aronson, Sue Charles, Kris Ekstrand, Kim English, Robin Weiss, and Mitchell Albala demonstrate that the key to “capturing” light is a delicate balance between value and color.

When the deposition is at the request of opposing counsel, an objection is proper where an expert has not been fairly compensated for the separate time and work to prepare specifically for the deposition. The federal rules require that experts be properly compensated for providing deposition testimony under FRCP 26(b)(4)(E)(i)-(ii). Whenever an objection to form is raised, the witness is still required to answer but the objection notes for the record that the form of the question was improper for being:ĩ) Opposing party’s failure to compensate the expert Improper form objections can fall into many categories, where some jurisdictions require the objecting party to note a specific ground and others allow a general “objection to form.” A common example is when an expert is asked a compound question, meaning a series of multiple questions without giving the witness an opportunity to answer each individually. “Objection to form” is a vague and broad objection, commonly raised during depositions. This sometimes occurs when the expert asks the interviewer for clarification about a question. The expert is there to testify to factual matters and questions presented should not presuppose or suggest the answer. 7) Leading or coaching of the expert witness by opposing counselĪnother standard objection when an expert is under direct examination by opposing question. Especially where scientific or otherwise technical data and conclusions are concerned, it is important to clear these mischaracterizations up on the record when they occur. In some instances during an expert’s deposition, opposing counsel may phrase a question by misstating the expert’s earlier testimony. 6) Mischaracterization of earlier testimony For example if the question is repeated to harass or otherwise embarrass the witness. This is especially important if the question is asked for any other purpose except clarification of earlier testimony. “Asked and answered” is a standard objection during depositions when the deponent is repeatedly asked a question they have answered. 5) Answers already provided by the expert earlier in the deposition The expert witness may answer when the certain persons designated in the protective order leave the deposition room. For example, Rule 26(c)(1)(G) says “he court may, for good cause, issue an order to protect a party or person from annoyance, embarrassment, oppression, or undue burden or expense, including…requiring that a trade secret or other confidential research, development, or commercial information not be revealed or be revealed only in a specified way.” This is an important rule to remember when dealing with terms of a business contract or client medical history. Under FRCP 26(c)(1), a party can move for a protective order of parts of an expert’s testimony that may require disclosure of sensitive and protected information. 4) Confidential information protected from persons at the deposition When appropriate, counsel can make the objection that the question is outside the scope of the expert’s assigned task. For example, in a medical malpractice case involving a faulty device, an expert may be familiar with other similar devices and face questions about his or her opinion about devices from other manufacturers. Generally, questions that attempt to elicit information outside the scope of the witness’ expertise are improper. 3) Testimony outside the scope of expert’s assigned task It is important to note that any objection based on privilege must be made or it is waived for the party that failed to raise it on the record. The Advisory Committee notes “he refocus of disclosure on “facts or data” is meant to limit disclosure to material of a factual nature by excluding theories or mental impressions of counsel.” 2) Privileged information Questions that ask expert witness opinions about the legal analysis of the case rather than purely factual information are objectionable on the grounds that the testimony qualifies as attorney work product protected under FRCP 26(b)(4)(C). For example, counsel can object when a question asks the expert for: 1) Legal analysis Instead of factual information It is important to note, however, that a deposition is still different than trial and there are a number of objections that can be properly raised with respect to an expert’s deposition testimony. In addition to its scientific and technical nature, sworn testimony that can be used to later impeach an expert witness at trial. Deposition ObjectionsĪn expert’s deposition is an important part of their overall testimony. Here, we cover a wide range of possible objections both attorneys and experts should review before deposition or trial. From discovery to trial, there are several occasions when objections to an expert’s opinion are proper. He earned his first Tony nomination for playing the charmingly murderous antihero Monty Navarro, who inherited his family’s fortune by killing off each and every relative that stood in his way. Following his Broadway debut in the emo-rock musical Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, he starred in the stage adaption of the romantic film Ghost, and A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder. The musical, which premiered at San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre, showcased his talents in physical comedy in the style of Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, complete with a bowler hat and cane.īut the variety in Pinkham’s career has always been notable. It’s been weirdly comforting to be like, ‘People have survived this before.’ I think at times in the past nine months, it has felt like, ‘How could we possibly survive this?’ I think, hopefully, for however many people show up at our concert, and others like it, that will provide an iota of light at the end of that tunnel.”Ī black-tie concert at Carnegie Hall marks a notable change from Pinkham’s most recent role - Sam in Benny and Joon, a stage adaptation of the 1993 film about the romance between a schizophrenic woman and an eccentric man. “It was written in the ‘30s, and those people back then were actually faced with similar outrageous truths in their sort of political sphere. “It’s weirdly exciting and also upsetting how much the show resonates on an hourly basis,” said Pinkham. One performer even worked Manafort’s name into the lyrics during rehearsal, and to the cast’s delight, it fit perfectly. Playing Carnegie Hall just shy of one year after Election Day, the musical’s relevance is further heightened by the news of Robert Mueller charging Paul Manafort with money laundering three days prior to the concert. Wintergreen is even criticized for how many vacations he takes during his first few months as President. And after taking office, he’s almost impeached. Rather than a somber political moment, his inauguration doubles as a showcase for his wedding. He plans to find his wife in a beauty pageant. “I think it would be impossible for us as performers not to acknowledge the context in which we’re performing the piece,” Pinkham said, adding, “There’s so much to connect it to.” The President runs on an unbelievable platform and wins. More than 70 years have passed since the musical last bowed on Broadway, but its relevance to present-day politics is arresting - and, as the cast has found, only enhanced as each hour passes. Mo Rocca, from “CBS Sunday Morning,” narrates the performance. It now takes the stage at Carnegie Hall on November 2 for a one-night only concert performance, with MasterVoices performing alongside Pinkham and Denée Benton ( Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812) as Mary Turner, Kevin Chamberlin ( The Addams Family) as Vice President Alexander Throttlebottom, and Elizabeth Stanley ( On the Town) as Diana Devereaux. Last revived in 1952, it was most recently seen in an Encores! Concert performance in 2006. His decision, which slights the pageant’s winner, Diana Devereaux, prompts a political scandal with a frenzied crowd demanding of the politician, “Corn muffins or justice?”Īfter opening on Broadway in 1931, Of Thee I Sing was the first musical to win the Pulitzer Prize. Wintergreen is immediately determined to wed Mary, the deciding factor for matrimony being her ability to make corn muffins. Without a viable political platform on which to run, he builds his campaign around love and is about to choose his wife from the contestants in a beauty pageant when he meets the practical, hardworking Mary Turner. Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind, Wintergreen is nominated to run for President. In the Gershwin-scored show, with a book by George S. Wintergreen in Of Thee I Sing, a musical satire about the American government and the driving forces behind political passions. Instead, he’s donning a tuxedo and taking the stage at Carnegie Hall to play President John P. The Tony-nominated actor, known for his performances in A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder and the PBS historical drama “Mercy Street,” is not changing careers to pursue work in a bakery. “Apparently, we’re all chasing corn muffins,” Bryce Pinkham laughed, before adding in a more serious tone, “Hopefully not for much longer.” Originally published on The Huffington Post Like fluid acrylic, tempera paint is not extremely thick, so it can drip downward if applied to a canvas on an easel. Tempera can be used on canvas, but it’s not always an ideal medium. Tempera paint is made of pigment with a water-soluble binder (in old times, the binder was egg, hence the alternate name: “egg tempera”). While gouache can be used on smaller paintings or to create effects like the gouache resist technique, painting on canvas can use up gouache very quickly, and you may find that using acrylic paint is a better choice. Gouache can be applied to canvas, but it is best to apply a fairly thick layer, with minimal water added. It is composed of color pigment with a binding agent such as gum arabic, often with a solid white pigment such as chalk (or sometimes even acrylic) incorporated. These two factors give gouache a much heavier texture and higher opacity than watercolor alone, but not quite the opacity of acrylic. Gouache is a unique type of paint that has characteristics of both acrylic and watercolor paint. Like acrylic, oil paint can be applied either with a brush or a palette knife it can even be applied without either, by using oil pigment bars (sort of like oil pastels). Their thick, viscous texture requires a heavy-duty painting surface to rest upon that won’t be degraded by oil, and a primed canvas provides just that. Whether it’s traditional oil paint or water-soluble oil paint, oils are very well suited to painting on canvas. Thinner acrylic paint (sometimes called “fluid acrylic”) will require a lot more paint to create an opaque layer, and can drip downward if painting on an easel. In terms of what type of acrylic paint to use, a thicker acrylic paint (sometimes called “heavy body”) will work best on canvas. A primed canvas provides an ideal surface for acrylic, which can be applied with a brush or palette knife. It’s easy to work with, requires minimal supplies and dries quickly. The best types of paint for canvas AcrylicĪcrylic paint is one of the most popular types of paint for painting on canvas, and with good reason. In this post, we’ll explore what paint to use on canvas by reviewing common painting media and explaining why they do or don’t work well on for painting on canvas. But you don’t have to learn the hard way. With so many paint options out there, it can be hard to know which medium is best suited for which painting surface. Canvas is a classic surface for creating art. But what is the best paint for canvas? Read on to learn the best and worst types of paint to use on canvas. |
